Local students in the fight against Covid
A group of students from Thomas Rotherham College have been gaining valuable work experience at the Rotherham Covid Vaccination Centre, located at the Rotherham Leisure Complex, whilst helping the local community in the fight against Covid.
The students are all studying BTEC Level 3 Health and Social Care, so when the opportunity was presented to them by the College’s Work Placement Team, they jumped at the chance to get involved.
Jan Venkatraman from NHS Rotherham who is coordinating the vaccination roll out at the Rotherham Leisure Centre said, “In a remarkably short time we have achieved an amazing mission. This would not have been possible without the support of our volunteers. I am extremely grateful to the work placement team who took my request on board and in a very short time got a team together for us. The commitment of the students involved is highly commendable – a very big thank you to all of them – especially to some who have been extremely flexible and gone above and beyond to help us achieve this”
Heather Sutton-Pinner, Work Placement Coordinator at TRC added, “What a fantastic opportunity for our students, to be involved in something so important to our community and our nation. Our students have been able to gain a huge bank of transferable skills which they will be able to take forward to University or future job roles”.
Morgan, who is studying Health and Social Care at the College, (pictured), said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the Vaccine Centre at Rotherham Leisure Centre. It has allowed me to develop a range of different skills, from my communication to my work ethic and quick thinking, also with developing my 6 C’s of Health and Social care. I have learnt how to use computer software, which applied to the checking in of individuals. I have also had to teach a number of other volunteers how to use the computers and the software, allowing me to develop on my leadership and mentoring skills. This was a great experience, and a great way in helping out the local community, I would recommend it to anyone”.
This is a fantastic example of TRC’s commitment to the community it serves and in providing valuable skills and opportunities to its students.
